1953.

city is situated in Transbaikalia, on Selenga middle mountains, in
Gusinoozersk trough, on north western lakeside of Gusinoe lake.

Renamings: Shakhty (1939-1953).
Economics:
Coal-mining (9/10 of coal mined in Buryatia is come from
Gusinoozersk mines). Radioplant, clothing factory, enterprises of food
industry, manufacture of building materials. Gusinoozersk state raion
electric power station.
Architecture and remarkables: There is
a lamasery (datsan) on south western lakeside of Gusinoe lake. It was
founded in 1741. Now it is a vast with regular planning complex of
temples and lama dwelling-houses with a settlement around it.
History:
It was founded in 1939 as Shakhty settlement owing to mining of bovey
coalfield. In 1953 it was transformed to the city and named Gusinoozersk
by the name of Gusinoe lake on lakeside of that it's situated. The name
of the lake connects that in the past it was a favourite place for
nidification of geese
